Suriname Animal Protection Society

NAME OF THE ORGANISATION

The Stichting Dierenbescherming Suriname (Suriname Animal Protection Society) is a non-profit organisation that is affiliated with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), which organisation is recognized by the United Nations. In addition, there are good contacts with Animal Protection Societies in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVES

The Suriname Animal Protection Society wants to do everything that is in the interest of animals and animal life in Suriname, amongst other things by:
• Protecting animals;
• Guarding against the abuse of animals;
• In case of disasters and accidents providing assistance to sick and hurt animals;
• Relieving incurably ill animals as soon as possible from their suffering in a humane manner;
• Promote the principles of animal protection more.

For as far as animals are concerned that live free in nature, the Suriname Animal Protection Society wishes to prevent that their natural habitats are destroyed, poisoned or disturbed, or that for some species so many are caught or killed that they become a species threatened with extinction.

The Suriname Animal Protection Society also tries to prevent the violation of acts and regulations in connection with the protection of specific animals, and takes or promotes measures to ensure that those animal species can lead a life as natural as possible.

In respect of animals in captivity (pets, cattle, poultry, wildlife,etc.) The Suriname Animal Protection Society wants to promote that they are well cared for and live in circumstances that are acceptable according to the standards of humaneness, without causing the animal unreasonable pain or injury, without harming the health of the animal or tormenting the animal.

PRINCIPLES

In its work, the Suriname Animal Protection Society is lead by two principles:
1. The recognition of the self-worth of animals.
All animals have self-worth. That means that animals are worth treating with respect as independent beings with feelings, consciousness and integrity.

2. Duty to Care
It is the duty of man, independent of differences in religious or philosophical views, to protect animals, treat them well, respect their freedom and their own life sphere and to spare their lives for as far as possible.

MISSION

Especially domesticated animals have the right to a good treatment and depend for that on their owner. Owners have therefor a (legal) duty to care. Unfortunately, not all owners observe this duty to care. It is also true that some people enjoy abusing animals. The result is that many animals in Suriname suffer needlessly. The Suriname Animal Protection Society wants to put an end to that.

The aim of the Suriname Animal Protection Society is: to induce the population of Suriname to treat its animals properly. This applies to everyone, irrespective of race, religion or views.
